The River Usk, one of the principal rivers in Wales. Rising in the Black Mountain in the west of The National Park and flowing south east to its mouth at Newport. The river is an SAC ( special area of conservation) and further information about its ecology can be found here Defra.gov

Penpont has the fishing rights to a mile of the river. We let a limited number of rods per day (4), and stipulate fly only, and catch and release. The river is famous for its wild Brown Trout on the spring rise. Given a plentiful autumn rainfall salmon can be caught too at the tail end of the season. Tickets are £25.00 per day. A guiding and tuition service can be arranged please look at the AAPGAI  website.

Other beats in the area can be booked through- www.wyeuskfoundation.org

We do feature in the Wye and Usk Passport booklet, Tickets can be booked through their website, see link above, or direct with the Estate office.

While Usk, as ever it runs murmuring by,

In that sweet concert seems to bear a part,

till dreamy softness steals upon the heart

of charmed angler idly sauntering nigh' --John Lloyd 1847.

We have a suitable swimming hole just beneath the bridge, with a small pebble beach. Being only about 15 miles from the source, the water always guarantees a refreshing dip for those hearty enough to take the plunge. It is advisable to swim in old trainers.

There is an All Weather Tennis Court, across the river, which beckons the more energetic to enjoy the peaceful surroundings for a ‘knock about' or serious game! Remember to bring your rackets, balls and trainers with you. We also have a table tennis table in the self catering wing.

The large flat lawn to the front of the main house is perfect for croquet, knocking a football about, or throwing a Frisbee.

A recent development has been the use of Penpont woodland areas by Bush craft companies for team building events, be it for corporate or private markets.

We currently work with and recommend a specialist company within this field.
